Haeundae Beach: Korea's Most Famous Coastal Playground

Haeundae (해운대해수욕장) is Korea's most famous and most visited beach, and arguably the most iconic stretch of coastline in the entire country. Located in the Haeundae district of Busan, Korea's second-largest city, it stretches approximately 1.5 kilometers along the southeastern coast, flanked by a modern high-rise resort district on one side and the East Sea's crystal-clear waters on the other. Hotels and tourist facilities were built, and the beach became the aspirational destination for Korean beach vacations. The construction of the Busan Exhibition and Convention Center (BEXCO) in 2001 added another dimension to the area, making it a major international conference and events venue. Haeundae's profile rose further with the establishment of the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), one of Asia's most prestigious film festivals held in the broader Haeundae area each October. Swimming and beach activities are the main draw in summer, with a full range of facilities including changing rooms, showers, rentals for sunbeds and umbrellas, and water sports equipment. The Haeundae Traditional Market (해운대시장) just behind the beach is an excellent stop for local street food and groceries. The Busan Aquarium (아쿠아리움) at the eastern end of the beach is popular with families. Haeundae Beach is accessible from Haeundae Station on Busan Metro Line 2. The beach is free to access at all times. Facilities including showers and changing rooms are available during the official swimming season (typically late June to late August). Summer is spectacular but extremely crowded — book accommodation well in advance if visiting in July or August. September and October offer pleasant weather with far fewer crowds and are arguably the best months to visit. The Busan International Film Festival in October transforms the surrounding area into a festival atmosphere.
