📖 상세 정보
Walking into a Korean convenience store — whether a GS25, CU, 7-Eleven, or Emart24 — is an experience unlike any in the world. These are not the stripped-down petrol station shops familiar to many travelers. Korean convenience stores are fully stocked with a rotating selection of freshly made onigiri (samgak kimbap), hot foods, refrigerated meal boxes, and a dizzying variety of snacks, drinks, and instant products, all available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The quality of convenience store food in Korea is genuinely impressive. Rice meal boxes (dosirak) are prepared fresh each morning with balanced combinations of rice, protein, and vegetables. The hot food station — typically a spinning rack near the register — holds fried items like hot dogs, corn dogs (hoteok), and seasoned chicken pieces that are restocked throughout the day. Triangular kimbap (samgak gimbap) are among the most iconic items: seaweed-wrapped rice parcels filled with everything from tuna mayo to kimchi to fire chicken. Korea has one of the highest convenience store densities in the world — more than one store per 1,000 people — and these stores serve as genuine meal destinations for millions of solo diners, students, and night-shift workers every day.
💡 여행자 팁
To open a triangular kimbap package correctly: pull tab marked '1' to break the outer seal, then pull tabs '2' and '3' from both sides to slide out the seaweed wrapper from between the rice — this keeps the seaweed crisp.
Most convenience stores have a microwave near the counter — do not hesitate to ask the staff to heat your meal box (전자레인지 써도 돼요? means 'Can I use the microwave?').
The best time to visit for fresh hot bar items is mid-morning (around 10–11 AM) or early evening (6–7 PM) when stores restock the hot food display.
