Ganjeolgot: Korea's First Sunrise of the New Year

Ganjeolgot (간절곶) is a dramatic coastal cape in Ulju-gun, Ulsan, projecting into the East Sea at the easternmost tip of the Korean mainland. The headland is anchored by a white lighthouse built in 1920, which has guided ships through these waters for over a century. The cape's name — meaning "earnest desire" — comes from a legend that fishermen's wives would stand here praying earnestly for their husbands' safe return. A 5-metre stone monument inscribed with a message of hope and a giant postbox sculpture have become iconic symbols of the site.

Ganjeolgot holds the distinction of being the first point on the Korean mainland to receive sunlight each day, approximately one minute before Hoengseong and two minutes before Dokdo Island. This geographic fact has elevated it to a site of deep cultural significance: since the early 2000s the cape has hosted Korea's largest New Year's sunrise festival, drawing over 200,000 visitors on the first morning of January. The festival includes traditional drum performances, a countdown ceremony, and the ringing of a giant bell at the moment of first light.

The coastal walking trail around the headland offers spectacular views of the open East Sea and, on clear days, Jeju Island is visible on the southern horizon. The lighthouse grounds are open year-round and the lighthouse interior is accessible on scheduled days. The giant postbox — large enough to walk into — serves as a wishing spot where visitors drop handwritten letters to be delivered to loved ones at year's end.

For the New Year's sunrise, arrive by 11 PM to secure a good viewing spot as the entire coastal road becomes a pedestrian zone. Dress in full winter layers as wind chill at the exposed cape can be severe. For a quieter visit, the cape is equally beautiful at any dawn throughout the year and is only a 40-minute drive from central Ulsan.
