Gyeongpo Beach & Lake: Gangneung's Twin Natural Wonders

Gyeongpo (경포) is a scenic area in northern Gangneung City, Gangwon Province, centered on two extraordinary natural features: Gyeongpo Beach (경포해변), a 1.8km white-sand beach on the East Sea coast, and Gyeongpo Lake (경포호), a large coastal lagoon separated from the sea by a narrow strip of land. Together they create one of Korea's most varied and beautiful coastal landscapes. Gyeongpo Lake is Korea's largest natural coastal lagoon, approximately 4km in circumference and up to 2.5 meters deep. Unlike the salty East Sea just meters away, the lagoon is technically brackish (a mix of fresh and salt water), creating a distinct ecosystem. The lake is ringed by a walking and cycling path, dotted with traditional pavilions, and famous for the reflections of moonlight and sunset colors on its still surface. The beach and lake together sit within Gyeongpo Provincial Park, a protected natural area that includes pine forests, sand dunes, and wetlands. The park is easily accessible from Gangneung city and has developed into a major tourist area, though its natural beauty remains intact. Gangneung city itself, elevated by hosting the 2018 Winter Olympics ice events, has become one of Korea's most popular travel destinations, and Gyeongpo is its scenic centerpiece.

Gyeongpo has been celebrated in Korean culture for centuries. The historic Gyeongpo Pavilion (경포대) on the northwest bank of the lake has existed in various forms since at least the Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392 CE). This traditional wooden pavilion is one of the Eight Views of Gwandong — a canonical list of eight especially beautiful views in the Gangwon Province region that inspired generations of Korean poets, painters, and scholars. The painter Kim Hong-do and the poet Song Gan both created famous works depicting Gyeongpo's scenery. The lake and its surrounding landscape became shorthand in Korean culture for serene natural beauty and the romantic ideal of the East Sea coast. Gyeongpo appears in Goryeo-era poetry and Joseon-era travel journals as a destination for the cultivated elite seeking natural beauty and poetic inspiration. The area gained renewed national attention when Gangneung hosted the ice sports events of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics. The Olympic venues are located near Gyeongpo, and the Olympics brought major infrastructure improvements and international attention to the broader Gangneung area. The famous Gangneung coffee street (강릉 카페거리) along the coast near Gyeongpo became a national trend-setter in Korean café culture.

The 4km walking path around Gyeongpo Lake is one of the most pleasant walks in Gangneung, especially in the early morning when the lake surface is calm and reflective. The path passes through pine groves, past reed beds where birds nest, and by several traditional pavilions including Gyeongpodae. Rental bicycles are available for the lake circuit. Gyeongpo Beach is ideal for swimming in summer and for dramatic East Sea sunrise views year-round. The beach faces due east, making it one of Korea's best sunrise spots — New Year's Day sunrise watching at Gyeongpo is a beloved Korean tradition. The beach has full facilities in summer including showers, changing rooms, and food vendors. The Gangneung Coffee Street (강릉 카페거리) along the coast road near Gyeongpo has become famous throughout Korea for the extraordinary concentration of independent, design-forward coffee roasters and cafés. Gangneung has developed a distinct coffee culture, and visiting several of the cafés along this road is now considered an integral part of the Gangneung experience.

Gyeongpo is approximately 6km from central Gangneung, accessible by local bus (Bus 202 from Gangneung Bus Terminal) or by taxi. Gangneung is connected to Seoul by KTX high-speed train (approximately 2 hours, very comfortable) and also by express bus. The New Year's Day sunrise at Gyeongpo Beach is one of Korea's most beloved annual traditions — expect large crowds. At other times, the beach and lake are accessible and reasonably uncrowded outside of summer weekends. Summer is the peak swimming season when the beach facilities are fully operational. Autumn and winter offer the most atmospheric visits to the lake with migratory birds and dramatic cloud formations. Combine Gyeongpo with a visit to Gangneung's excellent food scene — the city is known for Chodang sundubu (fresh tofu), naengmyeon, and café culture.
