Sinheungsa Temple: Gateway to Seoraksan's Sacred Heart

Sinheungsa (신흥사) is a Jogye Order Buddhist temple located in the Inner Seorak area of Seoraksan National Park, about 3 km from the park entrance near Sokcho. The temple complex includes the main hall, several shrines, monks' quarters, and a 15-metre tall outdoor bronze Tongil Daebul (통일대불) — a seated Buddha statue dedicated to the wish for Korean reunification. The surrounding valley is one of the most scenically stunning temple settings in Korea.

Sinheungsa was founded in 652 AD during the Silla Kingdom by the monk Jajang, making it one of the oldest Buddhist temples on the Korean peninsula. It was destroyed and rebuilt multiple times, most recently in 1648. The temple has long been associated with Korean Buddhism's Seon (Zen) tradition. The Tongil Daebul bronze Buddha, completed in 1997, was funded by donations from across Korea and symbolises hope for peaceful reunification — a particularly resonant theme given Sokcho's proximity to the DMZ.

Walking the 2.5 km path from the park entrance to Sinheungsa through the valley is itself a highlight — the trail follows a clear mountain stream with views of granite cliffs. The Tongil Daebul statue commands the approach to the main temple and is one of the largest outdoor bronze Buddhas in Korea. The main hall (Geungnakbojeon) contains intricate Buddhist paintings and carvings. From Sinheungsa, trails continue deeper into Seoraksan toward Biryong Falls and Ulsanbawi Rock.

Seoraksan National Park charges an entrance fee of 3,500 KRW per adult; Sinheungsa itself is free to enter. Autumn (late September to mid-October) is the most popular time when the valley fills with red and orange foliage. Arrive early on weekends to avoid crowds on the valley path. Good walking shoes are essential — the path involves some rocky sections. Shuttle buses run from the park entrance to reduce the walk during peak season.
