Soyang Lake: Korea's Largest Artificial Lake

Soyang Lake (소양호) is a large reservoir in Gangwon Province, formed by the Soyang Dam completed in 1973. The lake covers approximately 70 square kilometres and stretches into deep mountain valleys, with a maximum depth of 97 metres. Several lakeside villages can only be reached by ferry, giving the area a uniquely isolated character. The water is strikingly clear and blue, reflecting the surrounding Taebaek mountain ridges.

The Soyang Dam was constructed between 1967 and 1973 as part of the Korean government's national infrastructure program. It provides water to a significant portion of the Seoul metropolitan area and generates hydroelectric power. The dam's construction submerged several villages and agricultural areas, displacing thousands of residents — a history that is still part of local memory. The lake has since become a celebrated natural attraction and an important water source for the region.

The ferry from Soyang Dam pier to Cheongpyeong Temple is a popular scenic boat ride lasting about 30 minutes. Cheongpyeong Temple, perched on a steep hillside above the lake, is an active Buddhist monastery with scenic hiking trails. The Soyang Dam itself is open for viewing and offers perspectives of the immense rockfill structure. Fishing is popular along the lake margins, and kayaking and small boat tours operate seasonally.

Ferries to Cheongpyeong Temple depart from the Soyang Dam pier; schedules vary by season so check in advance. The lake is most beautiful in autumn when the surrounding mountains turn red and gold. Chuncheon city is well connected to Seoul by ITX-Cheongchun train (about 80 minutes from Yongsan). From Chuncheon, take a taxi or local bus to the Soyang Dam pier (about 10 minutes).
