Tongyeong Cable Car: Riding to the Top of Korea's Southern Coast

The Tongyeong Cable Car (통영케이블카) operates between the lower station in Dopyeon-dong and the upper station near the summit of Mireuk Mountain (461m). The 1.975-kilometre route was Korea's longest aerial cable car when it opened in 2008. Eight-passenger gondolas ascend over forested slopes to the upper station, where a sky walk, cafes, and viewing platforms provide 360-degree views of the Hallyeo Sea, the city, and the island-dotted southern coast.

Tongyeong is a city with deep cultural roots — it was the birthplace of composer Yun Isang, one of the most significant Korean composers of the 20th century, and has long been associated with arts and craftwork. The cable car was developed as a flagship tourism infrastructure project and has been central to Tongyeong's emergence as a major southern coast destination. The mountain summit offers a perspective that was previously accessible only to hikers willing to make a two-hour ascent.

The view from the upper station is the primary attraction: on clear days, visitors can count dozens of islands, watch ferries moving between them, and see Geoje Island's mountain ridge on the horizon. The Mireuk Mountain sky walk extends over the cliff for a vertiginous coastal view. Hiking trails from the upper station connect to the Mireuk Mountain summit and back down to the city through forest. The lower station is adjacent to the Tongyeong city park.

Round-trip tickets cost approximately 15,000 KRW for adults. Clear days (low humidity, no haze) are essential for the best views — morning is typically clearer than afternoon. The cable car closes in high winds, so check operating status before visiting. The lower station is accessible by taxi from central Tongyeong (about 10 minutes). Combine with Dongpirang Village, which is about 15 minutes on foot from the cable car lower station.
