Yeosu Ocean Cable Car: Aerial Views Over the Korean Riviera

The Yeosu Ocean Cable Car (여수 해상케이블카) opened in 2014 and became South Korea's first cable car to cross over open sea. The 1.5-kilometre route connects the Dolsan Park terminal on Dolsan Island with the Jayudo terminal on the Yeosu city waterfront. Standard crystal (transparent floor) gondolas seat eight passengers and the crossing takes about 15 minutes each way. The views encompass Odongdo Island, the Yeosu port, and the island chains of the Hallyeo Sea.

Yeosu hosted the 2012 World Expo under the theme "The Living Ocean and Coast," an event that dramatically accelerated the city's tourism infrastructure. The cable car was part of the post-Expo development that transformed Yeosu's waterfront into one of Korea's most attractive coastal destinations. The city's slogan "Yeosu Night Sea" (여수 밤바다), made famous by a 2012 pop song by Busker Busker, has made the nighttime waterfront view — as seen from the cable car — an iconic image.

The cable car ride itself is the attraction, best enjoyed in a glass-floor gondola. The Dolsan Park terminal sits near Hyangiram Hermitage, which can be visited after the cable car. The Jayudo terminal is adjacent to the central waterfront promenade with its seafood restaurants, Odongdo Island access, and the Expo Ocean Park. A round trip is recommended to see the views from both directions, particularly the panorama over the Yeosu archipelago heading toward Dolsan.

Round-trip tickets cost approximately 18,000 KRW for adults in a standard gondola, with crystal (glass floor) gondolas at a premium. Sunset and evening rides are the most atmospheric — the city's lights reflected on the water create the "Yeosu Night Sea" effect. Queues can be long in peak summer (July–August); book online in advance or arrive before 10am. Comfortable shoes are recommended as the Dolsan terminal involves some walking.
