Boriam: Namhae's Sacred Cliffside Buddhist Temple

Boriam (보리암) is a Buddhist hermitage temple (암자) clinging to the rocky summit of Geumsan Mountain (금산, 681 m) on Namhae Island in South Gyeongsang Province. The temple is classified as one of Korea's three sacred sites where prayers to the sea goddess are said to be most powerfully answered — the others being Naksan Temple in Yangyang and Hongryeonsa on Ganghwado. The compound includes a three-storey stone pagoda dating to the Goryeo period, a meditation hall carved partially into the living rock face, and an outdoor Gwaneum (Guanyin) statue facing the open South Sea.

According to temple records, Boriam was founded in 683 CE by the monk Uisang, the same figure credited with establishing Naksan Temple. The site was chosen because the granite summit of Geumsan offered an unobstructed view of the sea — essential for a temple dedicated to maritime prayers. The Goryeo-era pagoda survived intact through the Korean War and remains one of the oldest standing structures on Namhae Island. The temple gained national recognition when it became known as a site where prayers for university entrance, marriage, and the safe return of fishermen are particularly answered — a reputation that draws tens of thousands of pilgrims annually.

The ascent from the car park below takes about 40 minutes on a well-maintained stone path through pine forest. The summit views encompass the scattered islands of the South Sea, the Hallyeo Maritime National Park, and on clear days the distant outline of Jeju Island. Sunrise visits are particularly sacred and popular, with hundreds of visitors and pilgrims arriving before dawn. The temple compound is small but immaculately maintained, with incense smoke and the sound of wooden percussion bells creating an atmospheric setting.

The trail can be icy in winter — bring traction aids between December and February. The temple asks visitors to dress modestly and be quiet within the compound. A small cable car provides an alternative route for those unable to climb the stone path. The temple is accessible from Namhae Bus Terminal by local bus to the Boriam trailhead.
