What Is Dakgalbi Alley?

Dakgalbi Alley (닭갈비 골목) is a concentrated strip of restaurants in Chuncheon's Myeongdong district that specialise exclusively in Chuncheon-style dakgalbi. The dish consists of marinated chicken pieces, rice cakes (tteok), cabbage, and sweet potato cooked in a spicy gochujang-based sauce on a large round iron griddle placed directly on the table. Restaurants on this street have been serving the dish since the 1960s and 1970s.

History & Significance

Dakgalbi was invented in Chuncheon in the late 1960s as an affordable alternative to galbi (grilled ribs). Early vendors used chicken — cheaper and more available than pork or beef — marinated in a spicy sauce and cooked on repurposed iron griddles. The dish spread rapidly and became synonymous with Chuncheon. Today, Chuncheon Dakgalbi is officially designated as a local specialty food, and the alley is a destination visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists annually.

What to See & Do

The dining experience is the activity — ordering dakgalbi, watching it cook on the communal griddle, and eating together with friends or family. The classic accompaniment is soy sauce-seasoned rice mixed into the remaining sauce after the chicken is finished (볶음밥). Makgeolli (milky rice wine) is the traditional drink pairing. The surrounding Myeongdong area in Chuncheon also has cafes, dessert shops, and a pleasant pedestrian atmosphere.

Visitor Tips

Most restaurants charge around 12,000–15,000 KRW per person. Cheese dakgalbi (melted mozzarella added to the griddle) is a popular modern variation available at most establishments. Lunch hours (noon–2pm) are busy; evenings are even busier on weekends. The alley is walkable from Chuncheon station or accessible by taxi in about 10 minutes. Ask for 적당히 맵게 (moderately spicy) if you find Korean spice levels intense.

Tips

  • 💡Don't leave without doing the fried rice (볶음밥) at the end — it's the best part.
  • 💡Cheese dakgalbi is worth ordering if you enjoy melted cheese with spicy food.
  • 💡Come hungry: portions are generous and best shared between 2–3 people.
