Expo Science Park: Daejeon's Legacy of Innovation

Expo Science Park (엑스포과학공원) occupies the grounds of the 1993 Daejeon World Expo, which attracted over 14 million visitors and put Daejeon on the global map as Korea's science city. The park covers 930,000 square metres along the Gapcheon Stream and contains more than 20 science-themed pavilions, an IMAX theatre, an outdoor performance stage, an amusement zone, and the 93-metre Expo Tower with an observation deck.

The 1993 World Expo was held under the theme "The Challenge of a New Road of Development" and was South Korea's first World Expo. It coincided with Daejeon's designation as Korea's primary science and research hub, home to the Daedeok Innopolis research complex. The Expo helped cement Daejeon's identity as a city of science, and the park has preserved and expanded on that legacy for over three decades.

The Expo Tower observation deck offers panoramic views of Daejeon and is illuminated at night. The Energy Hall and Aerospace Hall feature hands-on interactive exhibits popular with children and students. The park hosts seasonal light festivals, most notably Expo Park's winter illumination event which attracts large crowds. Outdoor spaces along the stream are pleasant for cycling and walking.

Admission is inexpensive, and some outdoor areas are free to enter. The park is most atmospheric at night during light festival periods. It is located about 3 km northwest of Daejeon Station and is accessible by city bus or taxi. Allow 2–3 hours for a comfortable visit including the tower and two or three pavilions.
