Hanbat Arboretum: The Green Lung of Daejeon

Hanbat Arboretum (한밭수목원) is a 390,000-square-metre urban botanical garden divided into east and west sections, located in central Daejeon adjacent to the Expo Science Park. It contains over 1,800 plant species across themed zones including a rose garden, water garden, subtropical greenhouse, and forest trail network. The arboretum is free to enter and open year-round.

The arboretum was developed in the 1990s and 2000s as Daejeon expanded its green infrastructure in step with its growth as a major science and administrative city. Hanbat is the ancient name for the Daejeon region, meaning "wide field," and the arboretum reflects the city's commitment to preserving natural environments within an urban context. It is managed by the Daejeon Metropolitan City and serves as a living resource for botanical research and public education.

The rose garden peaks in late May and early June with thousands of blooms. The subtropical greenhouse shelters tropical plants and is a warm refuge in winter. Forest trails wind through mature woodland connecting the east and west sections, and the pond areas attract birds and are popular for quiet walks. The arboretum is connected to nearby Expo Science Park, making it easy to combine both in a single day.

Entry is free. Spring (April–June) is the most popular season when cherry blossoms and roses bloom. Autumn foliage is also spectacular, particularly in the forest trail sections. The arboretum is best reached by taxi from Daejeon Station (about 10 minutes) or by city bus. Cycling within the arboretum is not permitted, but the surrounding riverside paths are excellent for cycling.
