What Is Tongyeong Jungang Market?

Tongyeong Jungang Market (통영 중앙시장) is the main traditional market in Tongyeong, occupying a covered indoor arcade near the central harbour. It serves both residents and the growing tourist trade, offering fresh seafood from the Hallyeo Sea, dried seafood products, locally made lacquerware (najeonchilgi), and a food alley with Tongyeong-specific street food. The market connects directly to the waterfront and the fishing port.

History & Significance

Tongyeong (historically known as Chungmu) has been a significant port and fishing city for centuries. Its location at the edge of the Hallyeo archipelago made it a natural hub for the fishing trade, and markets have operated in this area since the Joseon Dynasty. The city is also famous for its lacquerware craft tradition, which was designated as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage element. Tongyeong gimbap — smaller than Seoul-style gimbap and served with radish kimchi and squid kimchi — originated in this market.

What to See & Do

The food alley in the market is the top priority: try Tongyeong gimbap (thin, small rolls), Chungmu hotteok (a savoury version of the sweet pancake, filled with glass noodles and kimchi), and fresh raw fish served with local banchan. The seafood section displays oysters, sea squirts (meongge), and octopus from the surrounding Hallyeo waters. The lacquerware shops near the market sell one of Korea's finest traditional craft products.

Visitor Tips

Tongyeong gimbap portions are small — order several and try them alongside the traditional accompaniments. The market is busiest in the morning and around lunchtime. It is within easy walking distance of Dongpirang Village and the cable car lower station. The fresh oyster bars near the harbour end of the market are excellent value in season (autumn through spring). Bring cash for market purchases.

Tips

  • 💡Tongyeong gimbap is a must-try — smaller and more delicate than the Seoul version, served with unique kimchi sides.
  • 💡Chungmu hotteok (savoury, filled with noodles) is a Tongyeong specialty not easily found elsewhere.
  • 💡Try fresh sea squirt (meongge) if you are adventurous — it is a local delicacy and highly seasonal.
