It became news because there was no photo. A month later, because there was one.

We tend to assume something has to happen before it becomes news.

But at a wedding in Bangkok on July 18, what became news was the thing that did not happen. Lisa and Baifern Pimchanok were in the same room, and there was no photo of the two of them together.

Less than a month later the same person was at the centre of the opposite story. This time a photo was the reason.

At a glance

Only the first row is inverted. One story ran because a photo was missing, the other because a photo existed. The raw material was opposite and the conclusion came out in the same shape — there is something between these two.

Nothing happening became the material

It helps to know what kind of event this was. July 18 in Bangkok was the third wedding reception of Thai actors Nadech Kugimiya and Yaya Urassaya, a couple who have been paired in Thai drama for well over a decade. Roughly 1,000 guests attended, and it was described as the biggest event in Thai entertainment in recent memory.

The guest list was heavy with Thai stars — Mario Maurer, James Jirayu, Jeff Satur, Bella Ranee, Kimmy Kimberley, and Baifern Pimchanok. Lisa of BLACKPINK was there too.

And the story that travelled was about something that did not take place: there was no photo of Lisa and Baifern together.

That produced speculation that the two had deliberately avoided each other. Look at the structure of the claim and you get this — the fact that nothing happened was the material the story was built from.

For a circumstance to work as evidence, one condition has to hold: it should not be explainable if the claim were false. A missing photo has far too many explanations.

• They may not have seen each other — there were a thousand guests
• They may have been there at different times
• A photo may have been taken and not posted
• They may simply not have taken one

Anything equally explained under either assumption is not evidence.

This is the same tool used when reading a story attributed to an anonymous source. There the question is about the origin of information that exists; here it is about information that does not.

One sentence from the person involved closed it

Baifern addressed it directly in an interview. She said she had seen Lisa but had not worked up the nerve to go over and ask for a photo, that she felt shy, and that she thought everyone should get to enjoy the evening comfortably. She added that plenty of people had already taken photos with Lisa, so she admired her quietly instead.

They had not avoided each other. She had not managed to say hello.

One more fact belongs here. Lisa did take photos with other guests that night, including the actor Kimmy Kimberley. Not taking a photo was not her posture for the evening.

What matters is less the conclusion than how it closed. No new evidence surfaced. No document contradicted anything. A person said one sentence, and that was the end of it.

But a month later, a photo that existed became the story

But on August 12 the opposite kind of story attached itself to the same person — a dating report linking Lisa and the Thai actor Blue Phongthiwat.

Blue Phongthiwat was born in 2000, three years after Lisa, and works as an actor, singer and model. The reported grounds were these:

The material is the exact inverse of July. Then the absence of a photo was the ground; now the presence of one is. The sentence produced came out the same shape either way.

The difference lies elsewhere. Neither side issued a statement this time. So it did not close the way July closed, and it is still open.

A footnote in the same coverage shows the pattern once more. Lisa had previously been photographed with Frédéric Arnault, son of LVMH chairman Bernard Arnault, and that passed without confirmation either.

So what do you actually judge on

The two cases together say the type of material does not separate anything. Presence and absence both get used. That leaves four things worth checking.

The last row is where readers slip most often. When nobody says anything it reads as they did not deny it, but performers stay quiet about their private lives for many reasons — because it is true, because the other person is not a public figure, because responding grows the story.

Silence is not a denial and it is not a confirmation.

Turn it around and when someone chooses the form of their own announcement, that form states the boundary. And mistaking something seen on screen for a current update is a third kind of blank.

What this means where you are

There is a practical edge here for readers outside Korea. Lisa is Thai and works in a Korean group, so her news gets manufactured twice over — once by Thai media and once by Korean media — before it reaches anyone reading in English.

That last row is the one that actually costs you. Speculation is vivid and spreads; a clarification is flat and does not. "There was no photo" crossed several languages in July. "She was too shy to say hello" did not travel nearly as far.

So one habit earns its keep when you read entertainment coverage in any language: look for the end of the story, not just the start. The article published a few days later usually says more, and it is often the one nobody bothered to translate.

For the August story, those few days have not arrived. While both sides stay quiet, what could this one even be resolved by?
