Daiso Korea Beauty — What to Buy Under 5,000 Won
Beauty brands at Daiso went from 7 in 2022 to over 160 in February 2026, products from 120 to 1,700 — all 5,000 won or less. What to check before buying.
There is a scene that keeps showing up in trip reports from Korea: a Daiso basket filling up with cosmetics. Four years ago that basket held stationery and storage boxes.
The numbers explain the shift. Beauty brands stocked at Daiso went from 7 in 2022 to more than 160 by February 2026, and the product count went from 120 to roughly 1,700. That is about 23x and 14x respectively. And every one of those items costs 5,000 won or less — roughly US$3.60.
At a glance
| Item | Number | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Beauty brands stocked | 7 → 160+ | 2022 → February 2026 (about 23x) |
| Products | 120 → ~1,700 | Same period (about 14x) |
| Price ceiling | 5,000 won | Applies to every item in the store |
| Beauty sales growth | 85% → 144% → about 70% | 2023 · 2024 · 2025, each year over year |
| Company revenue | 3.9689 trillion won | 2024 |
| Operating profit | 371.2 billion won (+41.8%) | 2024 |
| Stores | 1,576 | 2024 |
| Who buys the cosmetics | Age 40s 27% · 30s 25% | 2024, by sales |
The row that does not sit still is the growth line: 85%, then 144%, then about 70%. A category slowing from 144% to 70% is still a category doubling inside eighteen months, so the question worth asking is not how fast it grew but what a 5,000-won ceiling does to the thing inside the bottle.
Start with what Daiso actually is
The name causes constant confusion outside Korea, so let us be precise: the Daiso discussed here is a flat-price household goods chain operated by a Korean company. It runs on one rule. Every item in the store is priced at one of six points — 500, 1,000, 1,500, 2,000, 3,000 or 5,000 won. Five thousand won is the ceiling and there are no exceptions.
The scale looks like this.
| Year | Revenue |
|---|---|
| 2015 | 1 trillion won |
| 2019 | 2 trillion won |
| 2023 | 3 trillion won |
| 2024 | 3.9689 trillion won |
| 2025 | mid-4-trillion range (estimated) |
Operating profit in 2024 was 371.2 billion won, up 41.8% year over year, for a margin of roughly 9%. There are 1,576 stores, which in practice means most neighbourhoods in Korea have one. The online arm is growing too: Daiso Mall recorded 5.16 million monthly users in February, up 42% year over year.
That background matters for what follows. For a cosmetics brand, getting into Daiso means a nationwide distribution network of 1,600-plus stores opens at once.
Why cosmetics specifically — the ODM structure
Cosmetics was not a random category to pick. The shape of the Korean beauty industry made it the obvious one.
Korean cosmetics separates branding from manufacturing. Brands that own no factory — they do planning and marketing only — hand production to specialist companies that develop the formula and manufacture it, a model known as ODM. Korea Kolmar and Cosmax sit in that position, and the expansion of their capacity is the direct condition that made flat-price beauty possible.
In this structure a new brand can ship a product within months. An already-validated formula can be re-released in a smaller size with simpler packaging. That is how a 5,000-won price point gets hit without inventing anything.
The growth curve followed.
| Period | Daiso cosmetics sales growth |
|---|---|
| 2021 → 2022 | about 50% |
| 2022 → 2023 | 85% |
| 2023 → 2024 | 144% |
| 2024 → 2025 | about 70% |
Four consecutive years of double-digit-or-better growth, including one year where the category more than doubled. Retail rarely produces a line like that.
What the 5,000-won ceiling does to behaviour
But cheap alone does not explain it. The decisive fact is that cosmetics is a product you cannot evaluate until you have used it on your own skin.
A 30,000-won cream that does not suit you is a loss, and because it was a loss people keep using it anyway. A 5,000-won one is survivable. That gap is what produces the "just try it" purchase. With colour cosmetics the effect is stronger still — testing one lip shade costs almost nothing, so people test four.
The buyer profile is not what most people guess. Low-price cosmetics sounds like a teen and twenty-something category, but in 2024 Daiso's cosmetics sales came 27% from people in their 40s and 25% from people in their 30s — more than half between them. This is less about people learning makeup and more about people who already know what they are doing finding a cheaper option.
It stopped being only Daiso's business
Competitors arrived quickly.
- Lotte Mart launched a "value beauty zone" in June 2024 at a flat 4,950 won, currently running about 44 items
- E-Mart grouped sub-5,000-won cosmetics into a separate line called Wow Shop
Add the large conglomerates — Amorepacific and LG Household & Health Care have both released flat-price-channel brands — and the cheap cosmetics shelf is now one of the most contested spaces in Korean retail. The price line Daiso drew has become the market's reference line.
That does not mean the products are identical
Here is where to apply the brakes. A 5,000-won price means smaller volume, simpler packaging, or a shorter distribution chain. It does not mean the formula is the same as the version sold elsewhere. The full-price end of the same shelf is the store where a quarter of sales are foreign.
- A product with a near-identical name from the same brand may have a different formula and a different size
- Converted to price per 100ml, small-format items are sometimes more expensive, not less. That is the standard trap of travel sizes
- Cosmetics touch skin. Patch-testing anything new on the inside of your forearm and waiting a day is worth doing regardless of what it cost
What this means where you are
For a visitor this aisle is an opportunity, but walking in unprepared almost always ends in an impulse basket.
| Situation | What to actually do |
|---|---|
| Deciding what to buy | Go in with a list. The genuinely useful set for travellers is narrow — sheet masks, small sunscreens, lip balms, cleansing wipes, travel decant bottles: low-volume items where a failure costs almost nothing |
| Choosing a store | Pick a large branch. Tourist-district stores in Myeongdong, Hongdae and Gangnam allocate real floor space to beauty; residential-area stores are weighted to household goods and the cosmetics section is small |
| Baggage | Liquids are capped in cabin baggage. Small format helps here. Split cabin and checked items at the moment of purchase and you will not be discarding things at the airport |
| Is it worth carrying home | K-beauty is already on shelves and marketplaces across Southeast Asia and much of the world. But 5,000 won in a Korean store and the local retail price are completely different numbers. Check the local price before deciding what is worth the luggage weight |
| Tax refund | Visitor VAT refunds require a minimum spend at a single store. Buying 5,000-won items spread across several branches can leave you under the threshold every time. If you are buying a lot, concentrate it in one shop |
Knowing why it is cheap helps more at the shelf than knowing that it is cheap. Daiso cosmetics are inexpensive because volume, packaging and distribution steps were cut — not because quality was. This aisle is a good buy precisely in the categories where those three cuts do not matter to you.
