SM's Q2: 349.6 Billion Won and 13 Comebacks
Revenue rose 15.4% but album and streaming revenue fell; concerts were up 23.6% and merch 22.0%. aespa's new tour covers 25 regions, none of them in Asia.
SM Entertainment released its second-quarter 2026 results on 5 August, and published its release schedule for the rest of the year in the same document. Consolidated revenue was 349.6 billion won, up 15.4% year on year. But the detail Korean outlets kept pointing at is that album and streaming revenue actually fell. Concerts and merchandise filled the gap.
Thirteen acts release new records in the second half according to the Korean-language reports, and aespa opens a new world tour at Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul on 7 August. The 25 regions announced after Seoul are in North America, South America and Europe.
At a glance
| Item | Q2 2026 | Year on year |
|---|---|---|
| Consolidated revenue | 349.6 billion won | +15.4% |
| Consolidated operating profit | 52.9 billion won | +11.0% |
| Separate revenue | 240.6 billion won | +9.2% |
| Separate operating profit | 43.8 billion won | β4.6% |
| Separate net profit | 24.1 billion won | β18.1% |
| Acts releasing in H2 | 13 (5 in Q3, 8 in Q4) | β |
| aespa tour regions announced | 25 (North America, South America, Europe) | β |
The numbers point in two directions at once. The group as a whole grew on both revenue and profit, while the parent company on its own saw operating profit fall 4.6% and net profit fall 18.1%. That divergence is the story of the quarter.
This is an investor document, not a fan announcement
It circulated as a "second-half comeback lineup", but the list originally sat inside a quarterly earnings filing. SM is listed on KOSDAQ, and listed companies publish revenue and profit every quarter along with an explanation of what is coming. For an entertainment company, an artist release schedule is a revenue forecast, so it belongs in that document.
Knowing that changes how the list reads. It explains why there are quarters but no dates. What an investor needs is not the day but which quarter the revenue lands in. So an act marked "Q3" will appear somewhere between July and September β it does not mean a release date has been set.
A quick note on the company for readers who follow the music but not the business. SM was founded in 1995 and has released, in order, H.O.T., BoA, TVXQ, Girls' Generation, SHINee, EXO, NCT, aespa, RIIZE, NCT WISH and Hearts2Hearts. It is one of the three agencies Koreans call the "big three", and after a 2023 fight over control, Kakao became its largest shareholder.
Money arrives through four channels: recorded music, concerts and broadcast appearances, merchandise and licensing, and subsidiaries. Two subsidiaries were named in this quarter's explanation β Dreammaker, which produces concerts, and DearU, which runs the subscription service artists use to message fans.
Consolidated and separate are saying different things
The two terms that trip people up in earnings coverage are consolidated and separate. Consolidated includes subsidiaries; separate is the parent company alone.
This quarter they pointed opposite ways. Consolidated operating profit rose 11.0% to 52.9 billion won, while separate operating profit fell 4.6% to 43.8 billion won, and separate net profit fell 18.1% to 24.1 billion won. Read alongside the company crediting "improved profitability at key subsidiaries including Dreammaker and DearU", the direction is clear: this quarter's profit growth came from the subsidiaries rather than the parent.
Miss that distinction and you cannot explain how two headlines about the same company on the same day can say profit rose and profit fell. Both appeared on 5 August, and neither was wrong.
Seats and merchandise covered for the albums
On a separate basis, three lines grew.
| Line (separate basis) | Year on year |
|---|---|
| Performance revenue | +27.9% |
| Concert revenue | +23.6% |
| Merchandise and licensing | +22.0% |
All three rose in the twenties together. The company attributed it to global tours by TVXQ, Super Junior, EXO, aespa and NCT WISH, an NCT tenth-anniversary pop-up store, and merchandise tied to new releases from aespa, RIIZE and NCT WISH.
Set that against falling album and streaming revenue and the picture simplifies. One outlet ran the headline "concerts, not albums, are carrying the company".
Why do albums and concerts move in opposite directions? What follows is industry structure rather than anything in the filing. Album revenue concentrates in the first week of release, so a quarter's total swings on how many major releases happened to land in it. Concert revenue scales with venue capacity and number of shows, and merchandise scales with how much the person in that seat spends on the night. The same single fan generates far more money on the concert side than on the album side.
That the Korean industry as a whole is tilting this way is something we have measured twice already β in why half the price of a K-pop album is merchandise and the cost structure behind a 40,000 won lightstick.
The thirteen acts releasing in Q3 and Q4
| Quarter | Artist | Format |
|---|---|---|
| Q3 | Red Velvet | mini album |
| Q3 | NCT 127 | full album |
| Q3 | Minho (SHINee) | mini album |
| Q3 | WayV | mini album |
| Q3 | Girls' Generation-HRS | single |
| Q4 | Yesung (Super Junior) | full album |
| Q4 | Taeyeon (Girls' Generation) | full album |
| Q4 | Jaehyun (NCT) | full album |
| Q4 | NCT DREAM | full album |
| Q4 | Max Changmin (TVXQ) | mini album |
| Q4 | Xiaojun (WayV) | mini album |
| Q4 | NCT WISH | mini album |
| Q4 | Hearts2Hearts | single |
The shape of the list is worth noting. Five of the eight Q4 entries are solo or unit releases rather than full groups, which fits with group tours already occupying the second-half calendar.
One caution. Soompi, covering the same announcement in English, listed an EXO unit and RIIZE additionally in Q4, and gave a different Q3 composition. The Korean and English lists do not fully match. That kind of gap is common when the source material is a slide deck and outlets transcribe different portions of it. Treat thirteen as the confirmed minimum, not a closed roster.
A unit that started on YouTube made it into an earnings deck
The name that stands out in Q3 is Girls' Generation-HRS β Hyoyeon, Yuri and Sooyoung, with the initials taken from their names.
The unit was not assembled by the company. It came out of Hyoyeon's YouTube channel, where the three went to the SM building saying they wanted to make a debut track, and the process has been published as a series. Hyoyeon said on camera, "we are SM β nobody knows us down to the bone like SM does," and Yuri added, "we were born SM."
So a bit built for a variety channel ended up in a listed company's quarterly release plan. Girls' Generation debuted in 2007, which makes this their nineteenth year. A group at that point in its career occupying a line of the revenue forecast says something about how Korean agencies and artists re-attach to each other after the initial contract period β a structure covered in what a Korean agency contract renewal actually means.
No track or date has been announced. What is confirmed stops at "a single in Q3".
What this means where you are
For English-language readers this announcement lands unusually well, because the 25 announced regions are the ones you live in. aespa's tour β "2026-27 aespa LIVE TOUR β SYNK : COMPLEXITY" β runs through North America, South America and Europe after the Seoul opening. Asia dates were not included in this announcement.
| If you are in | What the announcement gives you | What to do first |
|---|---|---|
| North America | Included in the 25 regions | Watch for the local promoter's on-sale date, which is usually announced separately from the tour reveal |
| Europe | Included in the 25 regions | Same, and note that European legs often go on sale earlier relative to the show date than US legs |
| South America | Included in the 25 regions | Local promoters frequently handle payment in local currency only; check before assuming international cards work |
| Asia and Oceania | Not in this announcement | Not an omission of your country specifically β the entire Asian leg is unannounced |
| Anywhere | 7 August Seoul show screening in 146 cinemas across 11 regions | Which 11 regions is not in the published reports. Check your local cinema chain's own listing |
The 8 August show streams online through Beyond LIVE and Weverse, with Megabox handling cinema distribution inside Korea.
One structural point worth carrying into any tour announcement: world tours commonly announce the North American and European legs first and attach Asia later. How to read a missing country in a tour city list is covered in reading absences in K-pop tour lists. And when tickets do open, domestic fanclub presale usually clears first β the order is set out in how Korean concert presales are sequenced.
Other second-half concerts announced include Yunho, Super Junior-83z, Yesung, Ryeowook, NCT 127 and WayV, plus an NCT WISH fanmeeting tour. Which of these travel where has not been individually announced.
What this announcement leaves blank
Items that should not be read as confirmed:
- Individual release dates β all thirteen acts have a quarter only.
- aespa's Asian dates β whether Asia sits inside the 25 regions or gets a separate leg is unannounced.
- The 11 cinema regions β only the count was published, not the countries.
- Girls' Generation-HRS track and date β confirmed only as "a single in Q3".
- NCT WISH fanmeeting cities β only the existence of the tour was announced.
- Whether an EXO unit and RIIZE are included β they appear in English coverage but not the Korean reports.
Until the next notice, those six boxes are best left empty.
