The AAA has no form to file — the organiser writes the list

The 2026 Asia Artist Awards run December 5–6 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The Grammys make you file to be nominated and Venice makes you file and then get picked, but this award has no intake at all. The nominations arrive as attendance announcements. The reason it keeps happening outside Korea sits in the same place.

Awards news is usually read as "who won." Before that comes "who got on the list," and how that happens differs completely from award to award.

At the AAA there is no form for an artist to file. No intake, no entry fee, no deadline is published. What is published is a run of attendance announcements, released one at a time by the organiser.

The 2026 edition runs on December 5 and 6 at Kaohsiung National Stadium in Taiwan. This will be the fifth year in a row that a Korean awards show has been held outside Korea.

What matters in that table is the column that is not there. There is no nominee list. More precisely, the attendee list is the nominee list — the organiser announces that these people are attending as award candidates.

The award and its shortlist come from the same newspaper

The AAA started in 2016 as a combined awards show. It is organised by Money Today, a South Korean business newspaper, together with its media brand Star News, and run by the AAA organising committee.

The 2026 line-up emerged like this: the artist roster on July 28, actors Kim Seon-ho and Go Youn-jung on July 29, Kim Jae-won, Byeon Woo-seok, Ahn Hyo-seop and Chu Young-woo on August 5, then Kim You-jung, Moon Sang-min, Yoon Kyung-ho, Lee Da-hee and Heo Nam-jun on August 13. Every one of those came out as a Star News piece marked "official." The organiser and the outlet announcing it are the same company.

On how winners are decided, the committee's published explanation runs to two lines. It is based on big data covering fans from Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam through to Argentina, Mexico and Europe. And the Popularity Award is decided by a separate vote.

That makes it clear where fan involvement actually sits. Not at the point where the list is built — at the point where you choose from a list already built.

The same word — nominee — carries three different meanings across those rows. At the Grammys a nomination is something that does not exist unless you file for it; at Venice it is something you earn after filing, by surviving a cut to twenty; at the AAA it is the same thing as confirmed attendance.

The same structure decides the host city

But this method does not only settle the awards. It settles the city too.

An award that takes submissions cannot know in advance who will turn up. Entries have to close before there is a list, and the list has to exist before anyone can estimate the scale. An award that builds its list by invitation works the other way round. The line-up is locked first — and once it is, you can pick a city where that line-up sells tickets.

The venue history moves in exactly that direction.

2016–2018Seoul (Kyung Hee University) · Seoul (Jamsil) · Incheon (Namdong Gymnasium)

2026Kaohsiung National Stadium · two days

The venues grew from indoor halls to arenas to an open-air stadium. Kaohsiung National Stadium is not a concert hall but a main stadium, and 2026 is also the first time the show has stayed in the same city two years running.

The two-day format is likewise a first. An awards show normally compresses the prizes and the performances into three or four hours and finishes in a night. Booking two days means what has to fit no longer fits in one — and an open-air stadium held for two nights looks less like a broadcast and more like a concert that sells tickets.

It is worth being equally clear about what has not been settled. Ticket dates and prices, the full list of award categories, and broadcast plans by country have not been announced. If a seating chart or a line-up is circulating as if confirmed, check the source first.

Korea's year-end awards split three ways

December in Korea looks unusually crowded with awards shows. Half the reason is that there are three separate strands and they do not overlap.

StrandExamplesCondition for getting on the list
Broadcaster awardsKBS · MBC · SBS drama, entertainment and music awardsYou must have appeared on that broadcaster's programmes
Music awardsGolden Disc · Seoul Music Awards · MAMAAlbum and streaming performance blended with voting
CombinedAAAOrganiser invitation + big data + a popularity vote

The first row causes the most confusion. The same actor cannot even be nominated if the channel is different. What comes first is not whether the year's best performance was yours, but which broadcaster you gave it to.

What separates the AAA from the other two is that it puts actors and musicians on one stage. That structure is also why the 2026 artist line-up was announced before the actor line-up.

So rather than judging an award's weight by its name, it is more accurate to check who runs it and what they count. That habit is not limited to awards — neither a weekly music-show win nor a brand reputation index tells you what it measures until you open the formula.

What this means where you are

Holding it in Kaohsiung makes a practical difference for fans across Southeast Asia. Many departure cities are a shorter flight than Seoul, and the time-zone maths gets simpler.

CountryDifference from TaiwanIf it starts at 6 p.m. localCompared with a Seoul edition

Vietnam · Thailand · Indonesia (Jakarta)Taiwan is 1 hour ahead5 p.m.Two hours earlier
South KoreaKorea is 1 hour ahead7 p.m.

This is an evening plan, not an all-nighter.

If you are thinking of going, two things need checking. One is the ticket sale schedule, which has not been announced. The other is entry to Taiwan, where visa-free treatment and permitted stay differ by nationality. Confirm against your passport before you buy anything.

And when a name turns up in December headlines as a "Daesang winner," there is one more line you can ask about first. How did that person get on the list?
