Korean Salon Prices — 19,558 Won, or 60,000 Won
Korea Consumer Agency data: 19,558 won average, 25,000 in Incheon, 15,200 in North Jeolla. Inside one salon the price multiplies by who holds the scissors.
The thing that catches first-time visitors off guard in a Korean hair salon is not the price. It is the structure of the price list. "Cut" is not one line on the menu. It is several lines, each with a different number next to it.
The average sits here: according to Chamgagyeok, the price information portal run by the Korea Consumer Agency, the average women's haircut costs 19,558 won. Yet a news report from the same country carried a case of a "director's design cut" at 60,000 won — three times the average. That is not a mispriced menu. That is what the menu looks like.
At a glance
| Item | Number | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Average women's cut | 19,558 won | August 2025, Chamgagyeok |
| Five years earlier | 15,789 won | August 2020 (+23.9%) |
| Most expensive region | Incheon 25,000 won | Same basis |
| Cheapest region | North Jeolla 15,200 won | Gap of 9,800 won |
| Salon price inflation | 3.5% | August 2025, vs 1.7% headline CPI |
| Actual price range in market | Men's 5,000 won to 59,000-plus won | February 2026 reporting |
| Salon closures | 13,292 | 2024 (fourth straight annual rise) |
Two rows in the table contradict each other, and that is where this piece starts. Prices are up 23.9% in five years while closures have risen four years running. If prices climb and shops still shut, the thing that rose is not what customers pay but what the shop pays.
Why 'cut' appears several times on the menu
This structure does not show up in the statistics. It is the rule you meet when you open the door.
Korean salons very commonly grade the stylist and price accordingly. The titles run roughly like this.
| Title | Position | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Intern / assistant | Support — shampoo and blow-dry | Usually does not perform the service |
| Designer | Standard stylist | The base price on the menu |
| Silchang (senior) | Experienced | One step above base |
| Vice-director / director | Salon principal | Up to two or three times base |
On top of that, some salons add a request fee when you book a specific stylist by name. Then there is the length surcharge: once hair passes the shoulder, perms and colour services carry an extra charge. When a first-time customer feels the final bill did not match the quote, those two lines are almost always why.
Payment happens once, at the counter, after the service. There is no tipping culture. You do not need to add anything for good service, and attempts to do so are often politely declined.
What changed over five years
Prices here have moved faster than prices generally.
| Indicator | 2020–2021 | Recent | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average women's cut | 15,789 won (Aug 2020) | 19,558 won (Aug 2025) | +23.9% |
| National salon price index | 100.55 (Jan 2021) | 119.56 (Jan 2026) | +18.9% |
| Gyeonggi Province salons | — | — | +19.2% |
| Incheon salons | — | — | +22.5% |
| Incheon barbershops | — | — | +24.1%, highest of 17 regions |
Taking August 2025 alone: headline consumer prices rose 1.7% while salon prices rose 3.5%. Slightly more than double.
Prices rise, shops close
You would expect rising prices to mean a healthy trade. The other set of numbers says otherwise.
| Year | Salon closures |
|---|---|
| 2022 | 11,503 |
| 2023 | 12,646 |
| 2024 | 13,292 |
| Jan–Aug 2025 | 8,229 |
Industry surveys show the same pressure. 66.2% of salons planned to cut headcount or hold it flat, against 6.2% planning to expand, and 40.0% named labour costs as their leading burden.
The customer side left a trace too. Over 1–14 September, Daiso's hair scissors sales rose 6% and hair dye 20% year over year. Fringe trims and root touch-ups moved into the bathroom at home. The shop selling those scissors and that dye is the same one that went from 7 beauty brands to 160.
A 5,000-won cut and a 59,000-won cut exist in the same city
But an average erases this part entirely. The actual spread captured in 2026 reporting:
- Budget specialists — 5,000 won for a men's cut, 10,000 won for a women's. Walk in, out in 10 to 15 minutes
- Designer salons — 40,000 to 59,000-plus won, consultation and styling included
More than a tenfold gap — and the two do not really compete. The first sells the act of removing length. The second sells the decision about how the length should be removed. That is why grading has not disappeared from Korean price lists: the grade is priced on judgement, not on time.
Koreans buy scissors; foreign visitors buy plane tickets
One more thing sits at an angle to all of this. While Koreans trimmed their salon spending, foreign spending on grooming in Myeongdong grew, and changed direction.
Hair salons were 43% of Myeongdong's transaction value in 2025. In the first quarter of 2026, dermatology clinics were 63%. On one street, one group finds a 20,000-won cut too expensive and buys scissors, while another group boards a plane for a procedure.
The vocabulary on the menu
Machine translation handles Korean salon menus badly, because several of these terms are Korean coinages built from English fragments. They are different services at different prices, and asking for the wrong one is the most common way a visit goes sideways.
| Menu term | What it actually is |
|---|---|
| Volume magic (볼륨매직) | Chemical straightening with root volume left in. Not the same as a full straightening treatment, and priced above one |
| Down perm (다운펌) | The opposite request — flattening hair that sticks out, most often booked by men for side hair |
| Setting perm (셋팅펌) | A heated-rod perm producing defined, springy curls. Digital perm is a related variant |
| Root colour (뿌리염색) | Colouring only regrowth at the roots. Much cheaper than a full-length colour, and the usual maintenance booking |
| Clinic (클리닉) | A conditioning treatment, not a medical service. Frequently offered as an add-on after a perm or colour |
| Length surcharge (기장추가) | The extra charge once hair passes the shoulder. Applies to perms and colour, not usually to cuts |
Two of these — volume magic and down perm — have no clean English equivalent at all, which is why a photograph works better than a sentence.
What this means where you are
| Situation | What to actually do |
|---|---|
| Booking | Treat it as close to mandatory. Most booking apps require a Korean phone number for identity verification, so visitors realistically book by phone through their accommodation or pick a salon that handles foreign clients |
| Naming the service | Korean salon vocabulary translates badly. Volume magic, down perm, setting perm and root colour are four different services at four different prices. Two or three reference photos beat any verbal description |
| The quote | Confirm the total before you sit down. Grade pricing and length surcharges mean the final number can differ from the top line of the menu |
| Hair type | Hair across much of Southeast Asia differs from the Korean average in thickness and curl pattern. Products and timings calibrated for Korean hair may not transfer. Declare your perm, colour and bleach history at consultation |
| Time | Two to three hours is unremarkable once a perm or colour is involved. Booking into a one-hour gap between sightseeing stops usually breaks the day |
| Budget | The 5,000–10,000 won shop and the 40,000–60,000 won salon are different products. For a Korean styling experience, the second. For tidying up length mid-trip, the first |
Once you can read the price list, you stop seeing a price and start seeing a choice. A 60,000-won line does not mean an expensive salon. It means that salon has opened several tiers for you to pick from.
