Korean Photo Booths: Four Brands, Not One Genre
Insaeng Nekeot has 374 branches, Photoism 369, Photo Signature 206, Haru Film 116. Sector revenue grew 2.4x in four years while closures grew 3.5x.
Almost everyone who visits Korea comes home with one strip of four photographs. You step into a narrow booth, it shoots four times a few seconds apart, and a printed strip comes out.
Outside Korea people generally call this insaeng nekeot (μΈμλ€μ»·). That is not the name of the genre. It is one company's trading name β and right now that original brand is among the most troubled businesses in this market.
At a glance
| Item | Number | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Sector revenue (tax base) | 134.4 billion β 319.6 billion won | 2020 β 2024 (2.4x) |
| Closures over the same period | 176 β 611 | 2020 β 2024 (3.5x) |
| Most branches | Insaeng Nekeot, 374 | Fair Trade Commission, October 2024 |
| Second, third, fourth | Photoism 369 Β· Photo Signature 206 Β· Haru Film 116 | Same source |
| Original operator's revenue | 25.4bn β 22.5bn β around 19bn won | 2022 β 2023 β 2024 |
| Same company's operating result | β4.7 billion won | 2024 |
| Price per session | From around 4,000 won (more with added frames) | Varies by brand and branch |
Read the first two rows together and they should not both be true. Revenue 2.4x and closures 3.5x over the same four years means the money went somewhere the shops did not follow. The rest of this piece is about which brands ended up on which side of that split.
Insaeng Nekeot is a brand name
There are at least six brands you actually encounter on a Korean street.
| Brand | Operator | Branches |
|---|---|---|
| Insaeng Nekeot | LK Ventures | 374 β the original, started in Daegu in 2017 |
| Photoism / Photoism Colored | Seobuk | 369 |
| Photo Signature | Image Networks | 206 |
| Haru Film | HJJ Company | 116 |
| Photogray | APR | β |
| Mono Mansion | β | Black-and-white specialist. Few branches |
A different sign means a different booth, different lighting settings, different frame designs and a different tone in the output. Which door you walk through decides what the photograph looks like.
What actually happens inside the booth
The thing that catches first-timers out is how little time there is. Knowing the sequence in advance is the difference between four usable shots and four identical ones.
| Step | What happens | Easy to miss |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Payment | At a kiosk outside the booth you pick the shoot type and frame and pay | The frame is chosen here. You cannot change it afterwards |
| 2. Entry | Close the curtain and stand in front of the screen, which doubles as a mirror | The height adjustment button is inside the booth. Set it before you start |
| 3. Shooting | Auto-shoot after a countdown. Usually four to eight frames, of which you keep four | There are only a few seconds between shots. Without planned poses you get the same face four times |
| 4. Select and adjust | Choose the keepers on screen and set brightness and filter | There is a time limit. If you dither it advances automatically |
| 5. Printing | Wait 30 to 60 seconds outside | Many branches have the printer outside the booth |
| 6. Getting the files | A QR code appears on screen or on the strip | This is where you collect the originals and the short video. At some booths you cannot retrieve them after leaving |
You normally get two printed strips β the structure assumes two people take one each.
The original is not the best business
An unexpected set of numbers. Franchise disclosure filings show the relationship between average branch revenue and setup cost varies enormously by brand.
| Brand | Average branch revenue | Setup cost | Return on setup |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photoism Colored | 229.6m won | 71.7m won | 3.2x |
| Haru Film | 225.5m won | 55.6m won | 4.1x |
| Photogray | 202.8m won | 130.9m won | 1.5x |
| Photo Signature | 141.8m won | 105.8m won | 1.3x |
| Insaeng Nekeot | 88.8m won | 100.0m won | 0.9x |
The most famous name sits at the bottom β the only case where average branch revenue falls below the cost of opening one.
Company accounts point the same way. Revenue at LK Ventures, which operates Insaeng Nekeot, went from 25.4 billion won in 2022 to 22.5 billion in 2023 to around 19 billion in 2024, with a 4.7 billion won operating loss in 2024. The company described the fall in franchise count as strategic adjustment for market cleanup and quality maintenance, citing restructuring during a shift to unstaffed stores and a new platform.
Name recognition and per-branch performance have come apart. The original brand's fame puts branches everywhere, and density shrinks each branch's share. The brands that arrived later looked at that map before choosing their sites.
Revenue 2.4x, closures 3.5x
But zoom out from individual brands to the whole sector and the picture sharpens.
| Year | Sector revenue (tax base) | Closures |
|---|---|---|
| 2020 | 134.4 billion won | 176 |
| 2021 | β | 195 |
| 2022 | β | 296 |
| 2023 | β | 514 |
| 2024 | 319.6 billion won | 611 |
The market grew 2.4x while closures grew 3.5x. Shops shutting faster than a growing market grows is not a sign that demand cooled; it is a sign that the sites are saturated. Reporting on a surge in secondhand photo kiosks on the resale market appeared alongside these figures.
For a customer that table says two things. Being the original is no guarantee of the best output. And the branch that was there last month may not be there this month. Where people travel to take these strips in the first place is a map drawn by dramas.
So which door do you pick
The brands are generally characterised like this.
- Insaeng Nekeot β the most widespread, so the easiest to find. Output closest to the standard look
- Photoism β relatively premium booths, more lighting options and frequent frame updates
- Haru Film β fewer branches but the highest efficiency. Known for a soft, film-like tone
- Mono Mansion β black-and-white and monochrome specialist. Few branches, but visibly distinct output
That is brand-level tendency, though. Booth models and frames differ branch to branch even within one brand. There is no substitute for trying two or three.
What this means where you are
| Situation | What to actually do |
|---|---|
| How many times | Do not shoot only one brand. The same person in the same clothes comes out completely different under a different frame and lighting. At around 4,000 won a session, a failure costs almost nothing |
| What to check first | Not the sign β the frame list posted on that booth. Region-limited and season-limited frames exist and you cannot go back for them later. That is the real souvenir value here |
| Before you step in | Decide three poses. With only seconds between frames, improvising yields four copies of the same expression |
| Before you walk away | Confirm you scanned the QR code. Paper creases in a suitcase, and at some booths the originals and video cannot be retrieved once you leave |
| Going alone | Fine. The imagery is couples and friends, but there is no minimum, and plenty of people shoot solo |
| Finding one | Use a brand app or a photo booth map service. Closures are fast in this sector, so do not trust the address in an old blog post |
The value of this photograph is not image quality β a current phone beats it. What the booth sells is the fact that it comes out on paper, in that place, that day. You cannot delete it, and shooting again gives you a different picture. That is why these four frames outlast most of a Korea trip.
